Erie sends Girls Golfers to State

For the first time ever, Erie will be sending girls golfers to the state tournament on Monday, May 21.

On Wednesday, May 9, Maddie Cantwell and Mara Wissman both qualified for the state tournament at regional play. Cantwell shot a 96 to finish 13th and Wissman shot a 106 to finish tied for 17th

Erie has had a girls golf team for a few years but despite having excellent golfers pass through the ranks, like recent graduate Kelsi McDonald and current senior Shay Hoople, none of them have been able to qualify for state.

However, that changed this year with two sophomores qualifying for the state tournament. Cantwell and Wissman have lead a growing group of young Erie golfers.

Wissman says that there is (obviously) pressure to do well as the first golfers going to state from Erie. She says she has a mixture of “nerves and excitement” for the tournament.

Coach Brandon Bird says that the team goal this year was to qualify players for state. They have accomplished their goal, so he hopes they will play relaxed without high expectations at state.

Cantwell teed off at 8:30 and Wissman’s scheduled tee time was 10:27 in Colorado Springs. Updates should be provided on the Erie Girls Golf twitter account.

Good luck to both golfers at state!
