CARBON VALLEY — Erie’s swim team won their first-ever dual when they defeated Brighton 114-72 on Wednesday night.

Leading the way for Erie was senior star Payten Irwin, who won the 100 fly and 200 IM, as well as freshman sensation Anna Lillie, who won the 100 back and finished second in the 200 free, posting a state qualifying 1:08.22 in the back, giving Erie a state qualifier in every event less than two weeks into the season.

“I’m a senior now and this team is only in its second year so it’s super special to see how fast we are developing and achieving our goals!” said Irwin.

Lillie and Irwin are both qualified for five individual events. Irwin has swum on all three qualifying relays, and Lillie has swum two of them.

“I’ve been a swimmer for about five years now, and I swim club competitively year round. I came into the high school season with a lot of experience and fast times. I mean, it feels pretty cool, because I’ve never been acknowledged for my accomplishments like I have at Erie!” said Lillie.

Lillie isn’t the only freshman making waves. Anna Dunn and Kambrie Payne have also posted state qualifying times in multiple events, and have been on state qualifying relays.

“It’s awesome to see freshmen step up and perform where they’re needed and all three of those girls have done amazing,” exclaimed Irwin. “I couldn’t be more proud of them!”

And now, the Tigers will go into 2020 with an expanded state team, and their first-ever dual win.
