The Erie Boys golf program is a franchise built by very talented golfers. Although overshadowed by the dominant girls team, the boys are nothing to scoff at. They carry a very deep team, with many players able to shoot low and contribute to the team.
The boys team just experienced a major change as they moved into the larger 5A region. While definitely a tougher, more experienced field, the boys golfers are improving rapidly and making changes to adapt accordingly.
The boys played well all season constantly competing for one of the top spots. Junior Cole Reseigh showed his confidence in the team, “We have a lot of guys that can shoot in the 70s which gives us a lot of firepower going into tournaments”. After holding the lead in their league most of the season, they faced troubles at Coyote Creek and ended up being passed by Fairview High. Going into the final league match of the season, the team were down 7 shots to Fairview. These two teams were extremely competitive with each other all season constantly battling for the top spots.
The season-long match ended up coming down to the final 18 holes of the season. After all said and done, Erie ended the day with a collective score of 292 beating Fairviews 306 and securing the league championship.
This concluded the regular season, and sights were now set on Regionals and finally 5A State. Coach Brandon Bird announced he would be taking Sean Cary, Cole Reseigh, Owen Dubois, and Noah Haas to compete in post season events. This was determined by team standings, meaning over the season these four boys had the 4 lowest scoring averages.
Sean Cary finished the season with a 73.78 average. Cole Reseigh finished with a 76.47 average. Owen Dubois finished with a 76.76 average. And finally Noah Haas finished with a 78.59 average. These numbers are created with over a dozen tournament rounds.
Regionals took place at Broadlands Golf Club and hosted over 15 schools to compete for a small 21 spots at state. With over 40 kids in the field making the cut was going to be a tough feat. Luckily all the boys played well and qualified into state just maybe not the easiest way.
The cut line ended up being a 79 and 22 kids shot under that. Six players shot 78 and had to go into a 6 person, 5 spot playoff to decide who would be left out. Dubois, Reseigh, and Haas were all fighting for a spot in this playoff. Reseigh and Dubois both pared the first hole and secured their spots.
Haas on the other hand proceeded to play 3 additional playoff holes and birdied the last to get in. Cary emphasized, “I’m really excited to take a full team to state, I think we could have a good chance at playing well and maybe even coming home with some hardware. I’m super excited to see what happens.”
The boys have some serious work to do to live up to the dominant girls team. Though they definitely have the strength to live up to the girls one day, this season proved their spot as one of the more dominant teams on the field.
