Near the end of the boys golf season, Brandon Bird Erie’s Golf Coach helped prepare the Boys for the State Championship. They had a successful season and had high hopes for the State Championship this year and continued to work hard.
“What’s hard about golf is it’s always unpredictable, you never really know what to expect…” Bird explained.
Hayden Jackson reveals what goes on behind the team’s image and how they push each other to be better, as well as what the team has undergone in order to prepare for Golf State. “When I think about state I just try to make it nothing too crazy or over exaggerate because it’s just another tournament, especially during my senior year I’m trying to enjoy it more than really compete, ” Jackson described
The Golf team has had several memorable moments and continue to make history for Erie, this year they had high expectations and even won a regional for the first time in 20 years. “I’m not 100% sure I know that the Erie Boys have never won a state championship, so we definitely wanna be the first team to do that!” Brandon Bird states Eagerly.
The team has worked very hard through all the tournaments and practices with little to no time outside of school, making the memories so much more memorable and the moments more valuable.“Doing the bus rides and just talking with each other and having fun kind of makes the tournaments a little better and makes it more enjoyable.” Jackson recalls.
Brandon Bird has coached both Erie’s Boys and Girls Golf teams for a couple seasons now, there has been quite the success with Erie Girls golf as they’ve won two State championships now in a row. “It’s given me a chance to try to get it to be a winning program because I like to compete, I like to try and win.” Bird exclaims.
Erie’s Golf teams have shown success with the help of Brandon Bird and continue to improve year by year. As well as connecting students with not only teammates but coaches and teachers, oftentimes athletes on the team enroll in Brandon Bird’s journalism classes to develop an even stronger bond with Bird and show their commitment to the sport in and out of school. “The cool part about Golf is when you’re out there on the course, you see them struggle and overcome adversity, that kinda strengthens the ties and bonds that I have with my players or that the team has with each other,” Bird describes.
After gathering information on the team, they set out for State on October 2nd- October 3rd of 2023 and continue to keep each other’s spirits lifted on their bad days and keep a positive outlook. “Our expectation at the beginning of the season was to try and be a top 5 team at State, and that’s within our grasp right now”Bird
Overall, Boys Golf has the perfect opportunity to win State and make History for Erie once again. On top of making a strong bond they have now even more worth the hard work they’ve put in and keeping the season as memorable as possible.
