ERIE- Erie’s volleyball program showed up in a big way on Tuesday night, stunning a favored Evergreen (1-1, 0-0) in four sets.

The first set was the only one that Erie (2-0, 0-0) didn’t manage to pull out. The back and forth set, as they all were, went Evergreen’s way thanks to a couple of kills from Missouri commit Claudia Dillon.

Transfer junior Kate Sebesta played a big role in the second set. She racked up 8 kills and several consecutive ones to help Erie. They jumped out to a big lead but Evergreen climbed back into the set. A kill or two from Sydney Crites helped put the Cougars away in set number 2, with the score being identical to the first at 25-23.

The third set was more of the same from the first two. Sebesta racked up more kills, as did Claudia Dillon. Sydney Crites also had some big kills, especially towards the end of the set. She also ended the set with

The fourth set started out looking like the game would go five sets. Evergreen came out to a quick 10-4 lead. Erie stormed back, thanks to several miscues and a couple good plays.

Skylar Small’s soft serve gave Evergreen’s return team fits, helping get Erie back in the set. This set went longer than any other set, with neither team able to hold a lead. Haley Hahn also had several big kills throughout the last two sets. Sebesta had a kill to put the Tigers at their third match point, and fittingly, the fourth set and match ended on an Evergreen miscue.

After the game, Hahn said that the team did a great job playing for each other. She added that their goal is to come in with no expectations, and given the result, they did a great job of that tonight.

Volleyball plays next on Thursday when they travel to take on 5A #2 Fossil Ridge in Fort Collins. Evergreen will try to rebound at Chatfield on Thursday as well.
