Erie High School’s track and field team has a new leader, and athletes are already feeling the impact. Alan Culpepper, took the helm this season, bringing a fresh perspective, expert knowledge, and an infectious enthusiasm that is inspiring runners to push themselves further than ever before.
Since Culpepper’s arrival, the Erie Tigers have seen a noticeable change in training intensity, strategy, and team morale. Culpepper has seamlessly transitioned his elite-level experience into high school coaching, focusing on both physical conditioning and the mental toughness needed to compete at a high level.
“Coach Culpepper has really changed the way we think about running,” said Jaden . “His workouts are tough, but he always explains the ‘why’ behind everything we do, which keeps us motivated.”
For many athletes, Culpepper’s influence goes beyond just improving race times. His emphasis on discipline, goal-setting, and teamwork has fostered a more focused and determined team atmosphere.
“He breaks things down in a way that makes sense,” carson said. “From breathing techniques to pacing strategies, he’s taught us how to run smarter, not just harder. I feel like I’ve improved so much in just a few months.”
Beyond his training expertise, Culpepper has also made an effort to connect with athletes on a personal level. Team members appreciate his approachable nature and willingness to listen to their concerns, whether about training, school, or life beyond the track.
“He’s not just a coach—he’s a mentor,” said sophomore Jaden. “He understands what it takes to be great, and he believes in us. That makes all the difference.”
Under Culpepper’s leadership, the Erie Tigers have already started seeing results in early-season meets, with multiple athletes achieving personal bests. More importantly, the team’s newfound confidence and camaraderie suggest that this season could be one of the program’s most successful yet.
Culpepper’s background as a runner has also provided the team with valuable insights into race-day preparation. He shares personal anecdotes about his own experiences competing at the highest level, helping athletes stay calm and confident under pressure.
“The goal isn’t just to win races,” Culpepper said. “It’s about helping these athletes realize what they’re capable of. If they put in the effort and believe in themselves, the results will follow.”
