Erie High School’s theatre program is diving headfirst into 2025, with students and staff already hard at work preparing for their spring musical, Into the Woods. As rehearsals ramp up, the excitement among the cast and crew is palpable.
“We are starting the new year off by jumping right into rehearsals and getting ready for our spring musical,” explained Fenix Pinilla, “We’re getting so much done, it’s gonna be so much fun, and it’s just going to be such an awesome show.”
The musical is scheduled to take the stage on March 6th, 7th, and 8th, promising to bring the cherished Stephen Sondheim classic to life. The story of Into the Woods intertwines beloved fairy tales like Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Little Red Riding Hood into a rich tapestry of music, humor, and life lessons, making it a highly anticipated production.
Preparing for a production of this scale requires tremendous effort from both the performers and the technical crew. Rehearsals are in full swing, and students are spending significant time refining their performances, learning choreography, and perfecting vocal arrangements. But the work goes far beyond what happens on stage.
“To prepare, we spend lots of time rehearsing and focusing on technology because there are lots of tech aspects and construction involved in production,” explained Pinilla, “Our tech heads are in charge of costumes, lighting, sound, and construction. We spend a lot of time on these to make sure we have the right resources in order for this project to happen.”
From set design and lighting to costume construction and sound engineering, the program emphasizes a collaborative effort. This teamwork not only ensures a polished final product but also provides students with invaluable technical and creative skills.
The Erie High School theatre program is known for its inclusivity and ability to foster creativity. The group encourages anyone interested in the arts to get involved, whether on stage or behind the scenes.
“Anyone can be involved in theatre,” Pinilla shared. “All students will have to do is talk to Mr wright.” We could always use the help, and it’s just a really great way to be involved in something that’s a part of EHS. New people mean new creativity.”
This open-door policy allows students to explore their interests, develop new skills, and contribute to the vibrant culture of the school. For some, it’s a way to step into the spotlight; for others, it’s a chance to shine behind the scenes.
The Erie High School theatre program has earned recognition in recent years for its impressive productions. In fact, the school’s spring productions have been nominated for and won statewide awards two years in a row. These accolades reflect the program’s commitment to quality and creativity.
“Theatre is one of the best ways that we show how creative and talented our school is,” noted Pinilla. “It takes a lot of work and effort to make a production happen, and the quality of the shows we produce is really impressive compared to other schools.”
As the curtain rises on another year, the theatre group’s dedication not only enhances Erie High School’s reputation but also creates opportunities for students to grow and thrive. From fostering creativity to building confidence, the impact of theatre extends far beyond the stage.
With Into the Woods on the horizon, the Erie High School theatre program is inviting the community to mark their calendars and support this ambitious production. Whether as an audience member or a new volunteer, there’s a role for everyone to play in celebrating the arts at EHS.
