As the winter chill settles in, students at Erie High School are embracing the season in a variety of ways. From snowboarding to baking cookies and skating at the Erie Ice Skating Rink, the community offers something for everyone to enjoy when temperatures drop and snow starts to fall.
For some students, winter is the perfect excuse to stay cozy indoors. Alyssa Bush, a junior, says she takes advantage of snowy days to enjoy one of her favorite hobbies: baking. “When it’s really cold outside, I love staying in and baking cookies. It’s fun, relaxing, and you get to enjoy something sweet when you’re done,” Bush said. “My friends and I will sometimes bake together, and it’s a great way to spend time during the winter months.”
While some prefer to stay inside, others like to take advantage of Erie’s outdoor winter sports opportunities. Mary Hickerson, a junior, is an avid snowboarder who can’t wait for fresh powder. “Snowboarding is the best part of winter for me,” Hickerson said. “There’s nothing like being out on the slopes with your friends. It’s a great way to stay active and make the most of the snow.” Hickerson often heads to nearby resorts on weekends and encourages others to give it a try. “It’s tough at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’s so much fun.”
One of Erie’s most popular winter attractions for students is the Erie Ice Skating Rink, which opened on November 30 and will remain open until February 17. Located in the heart of town, the rink has become a favorite spot for friends and families to gather during the colder months. Riley Valania, a junior, shared her enthusiasm for ice skating. “I love going to the rink,” Valania said. “It’s so much fun, and it’s a great way to spend time with friends. Even if you’re not the best skater, everyone can laugh and have a good time. Plus, they usually have hot chocolate there, which makes it even better.”
Winter in Erie can be cold and snowy, but it’s also a season full of opportunities to try new activities or rediscover old favorites. Whether it’s baking cookies at home, snowboarding down the slopes, or lacing up skates for an afternoon at the rink, students are finding ways to make the most of the season.
For those looking to get involved, community events and winter programs are also available throughout the town. Many students agree that even on the coldest days, Erie offers something for everyone.
