The end of fall semester is right around the corner, and student government is as busy as ever with numerous school events coming up. The class is bustling with members, planning, posting, and organizing events and activities for the next semester.
Coming up at the beginning of the spring semester, Stugo has been busy planning Wish Week. Through school events and spirit weeks, Stugo raises money for the Make a Wish Foundation alongside sponsoring a child in the Foundation, planning the spirit weeks around that child’s interests.
This is the second year that Stugo has planned a Wish Week, but this year they are taking a new approach. “I don’t think it got announced enough and people didn’t really know about it, so this year we’re kind of blowing it up, and we’re really excited,” Stugo vice president, Brooklyn Smith commented.
Last year, during Wish Week, Erie’s Dance and Cheer teams were gone for Nationals and student participation was fairly low, this year with their new marketing strategies and more students being involved, the Stugo team is hoping for much higher participation numbers. Social Media Manager Melanie Bell continued, “I think that everyone is on social media and I think that if more people see more posts they’re going to be like, oh I’ll show up, so that’s like the main goal.”
Along with Wish Week, Stugo is also beginning their planning process for prom and prom week which is in April of next semester. “We got powder puff again, more activities, and prom will be off campus again,” Smith elaborates, Bell also added her excitement, “last year it was super fun and this year is going to be even better.”
This year, Stugo has a new teacher leading the class, Ryan Salzeider, which has changed a lot of how the class runs, “the way that we organize and propose ideas are different,” Smith furthers. Stugo also has a new office admin helping this year, Joseph Newswander, Smith continues saying, “he’s been very supportive and encouraging, so it’s been a lot easier to have ideas and get things approved.”
Even for new members in Stugo, the ease of the planning and organizing is obvious in the class. This year is Jude Miller’s, the Junior Class President’s, first year of Stugo, and even he has noticed a switch, “the process we have is very helpful and we get things done a lot easier according to what I’ve heard people say about last year,” Miller asserts.
As Stugo plans for the next semester, Wish Week, prom, and prom week are the top priorities in the planning and organizing process, making Erie High students have a lot to look forward to.
