In a season marked by upheaval and uncertainty, the Erie Tigers boys tennis team has emerged as a surprising contender for a spot in the 5A state tournament. The Tigers, who are no strangers to the challenges of high school sports, have navigated a challenging start to the season following the unexpected departure of former head coach Matt Chavez.
Taking the reins is former assistant coach Aaron Duelm, who has stepped up to lead the team in a year where more than half of last season’s varsity roster graduated. Despite these significant challenges, Duelm has instilled a sense of determination and camaraderie among his players, setting the stage for a remarkable run within the box state.
Joining Duelm’s coaching staff are new assistant coaches Bob Olsen and MJ Sayers, both of whom bring fresh perspectives and strategies to the team. Olsen has stepped in as a leader for the doubles lines, emphasizing doubles strategy and technique, while Sayers provides players with helpful mental tips during matches, as well as supplying players with competition during practice.
“With the coaching change, we all had to be a little bit flexible for sure,” noted Junior 1 Doubles player, Dante Bustamante, “But I think Aaron (Duelm) has done a really good job considering that he was kind of thrown into the spot,” Bustamante continued.
The Tigers have rallied behind their new leadership, demonstrating impressive chemistry and improvement on the court. With a roster featuring several promising newcomers alongside seasoned players, Erie has found itself on the brink of something historic: a chance to compete at the 5A team state tournament for the first time in the school’s history.
“I think this year we’ve done a good job of building chemistry with the team,” Duelm noted, reflecting on the team’s journey. “I’m proud of the way we’ve improved and handled ourselves this year”
As the season progresses, the Tigers remain competitive in their league, earning crucial wins, such as Silver Creek and Longmont, that have propelled them closer to the coveted state berth. With each match, the team is proving that they can overcome the odds, fueled by a relentless work ethic and a common trust in each other.
“We’ve had to adapt a lot this year,” notes senior captain, Braden Knight, “but we’re doing a pretty good job.”
The Tigers will need to continue their impressive streak in the coming weeks, as they face stiff competition at Valor Christian High School for individual regionals in their quest for individual state tournament appearances. However, with the support of their dedicated coaching staff and a growing sense of unity, the Erie Tigers are poised to make history.
As the tennis community rallies around the team, excitement is building for what could be a landmark season for Erie High School tennis. With each match, the Tigers are not just playing against the odds, but for victories. And most importantly; they’re playing for legacy.
