The Erie High School football team has never been more successful than in recent years. With over 10 players playing football in college, Erie is pumping out talent like never before.
While the talent in Erie has been tremendous, it is not the only reason for the school’s recent success. Head coach Jeff Giger is a key component to the success of the football program.
Coach Giger joined Erie’s football program after successful stints at his previous high schools including a state championship with Strasburg. Star linebacker Carson Hageman mentioned; “I think what sets him apart is his ability to connect with his players. He really gets to understand the players and I think that is special.”
Giger’s coaching philosophy goes beyond the X’s and O’s of football. He places a strong emphasis on character development and turning young men into great young men.
This approach has not only led to victories on the field but has also prepared his players for life after high school. Giger is known for his motivational speeches and his open-door policy, which allows players to approach him with any issues, whether they are football-related or personal.
Quarterback Jack Arnold spoke of his special bond with Coach Giger; “I feel like if I have an issue at school or with my family I can come to Coach with it and he will help me resolve the issue.”
While some coaches may have a coaching style focusing on intimidation, Coach Giger has a more lead by example coaching style. With the implementation of player-led practices, Giger is letting the players lead their own practices as a way of demonstrating leadership throughout the roster.
Linebacker Keaton Strange spoke very highly of the head coach; “He’s really been a great impact on me personally. I think I’m a better person because of him.” Keaton, along with almost every other player in the program could not have more respect for their coach.
With a combination of talented players, top tier coaching, and unwavering community support, the Erie High School football team is poised to maintain its trajectory of success for years to come. Coach Giger’s influence has created a legacy that will benefit the program long after he has moved on, ensuring that Erie continues to be a powerhouse in Colorado high school football.
