Erie High School Volleyball players are getting out their jerseys to gear up for a better comeback for this year.
Myla Wilkes, hitter for the team said.” . “We are 3-3 (September 20) right now and the season started off rough but right now we are doing a lot better because we are more connected.”
Volleyball is known to be a very mental sport, where team unity plays an important role in success. Grace Moeding, junior and libero/defensive specialist says, “chemistry for volleyball is such an important part of it.” She continues reflecting, “if you don’t have chemistry in volleyball, then you don’t have any of it.” Moeding explains how it’s crucial for yourself and everyone to find a group to get along with, or it could release a whole new set of challenges regarding teamwork and friendship.
Layla Dageenakis, a C team volleyball player, shared her perspective on the mental hurdles of playing volleyball. “I think volleyball is mentally challenging because when you mess up you blame yourself.” Volleyball is as much an individual sport as a team. Each point is either scored or lost individually.
Another star varsity player, Senior Mackenzie Greenlee, informs that another grueling aspect of volleyball is having consistency per match. “I think the most challenging part of volleyball is staying consistent and having good communication throughout the entire game.” Greenlee says “I think volleyball is a very challenging sport because you have to rely on yourself and five other teammates at the same time…If one person slips then the entire team slips.
The varsity girls are currently 18-7 so far. All of the girls immediately said communication. They emphasized the significance of overcoming mental challenges and how they all put their skills to use. They all highlighted the importance of teamwork skills and friendship within one another that sets them up for success every time they play. It’s crucial that they show maturity and determination for a successful season. And With every sport comes its challenges but little by little the girls are making their way back up and supporting each other along the way.
