Last year, during the late part of the second semester, the Erie High student government election was in full swing, with candidates campaigning, debates happening, and everyone deciding their votes. Now, it being the beginning of the 23-24 school year, the students of Erie High School are now discovering if they made the right decisions.
The elected candidates for Student Body President and Vice President are Seniors, Mia Martinez and Dax Bradshaw. As the Student Body President, Martinez oversees the entire class to make sure everything is running smoothly as well as helping plan the events that the student government puts on, she adds, “my freshman year I got to start the dodgeball tournament, so just kind of getting those started, and now that it’s are hitting our fourth year of those it’s pretty cool to see where I started and where I’m at now.”
Bradshaw, as the Vice President, he runs all the meetings that student government has by making sure there are clear goals for every meeting and making sure they run smoothly, Bradshaw states, “homecoming week for example, we had to have several meetings on what spirit days were going to be, because those all have to be approved through admin.” The VP also gives the other students in the class help where it is needed.
As a part of STUGO’s new year, there are some news roles as well. For example, the new role of Social Media Manager for STUGO is Melanie Bell, she mainly runs the social media pages for student government, like their Tik Tok and Instagram.
There is also the Student Activities Manager role that is taken up by Brooklyn Smith. Her main role is to plan anything that is or related to student activities, “that’s pep rallies, we are working on a parade, the halftime show for homecoming…the dodgeball tournament, and anything that involves students,” Smith listed.
This year STUGO plans to take their work up a notch by planning a ton more unique events and taking some old events and tweaking them to make them more student involved or just adding extra things to improve traditional events, “instead of doing so much, we’re focusing on perfecting little things,” Martinez says.
As well as perfecting old events the class is also planning on involving the student body and the Erie community more. Bradshaw states, “we kind of phrase it as: how do we want to involve all of us? Because we’re all one community…and it’s kind of cool to think about, that we’re all so different people but we all have one thing in common is we go to school here.”
The Erie Student Government definitely has some big plans for our school this year, and the students cannot wait to see what they are, how they are going to evolve from previous years and what this new group of STUGO students has in store for the Erie community.
