Sending Off The Seniors: Boys and Girls Basketball Senior Night

Porter Hamilton, Student Writer

“John, we know there’s big things in your future and we all wish you the best of luck”:  This was last quote of the emotional senior night speeches for the boys.

Thursday February 16th, is a date that will forever be embedded in the minds of the seniors of Erie High, as this is the day of their last basketball game. Those seniors include guards Colton Turner, John Wright, Grady Carey, and Darryk Hall. As well as Center Jett Hinze.

Each of these seniors left their high school careers with a game to remember. For example, Colton Turner led the team in scoring with 15 points while Darryk Hall set him up with his five assists and Jett and Grady’s four rebounds each set the tone on the boards.

The game started as the Tiger’s Jett Hinze won the tip by knocking it to fellow senior, point guard Darryk Hall pull up from half court, but this attempt came up short.

With season high attendance this game was bound to be exciting and loud for our seniors. As the clock ran down to zero the scoreboard read Prairie View 67 Tigers 62. Though your tigers had come up short they made sure that the night and game would never be forgotten.

The following day your Tigers were in for another emotional night as it was senior night for our girls team. Our girls team was sending off senior forwards Abigail Hounder, Mia Welty, and Kaylee Torres.

Welty and Abigail Hounder held the second and third spots on the team for rebounds with Welty having 100 and Abigail having 78. Welty also finished third in points with 121.

Though the Tigers fell just short of the playoffs these seniors helped lead the way to an amazing improvement from being just 7-17 before the girls finished 11-12 this year and just outside the playoff picture.

This senior night the girls had a tough opponent in Fairview but we knew our seniors would not back down. The score at the half was Fairview 22 Erie 26. As the Tigers started to pull away in the second half it became evident the Tigers were going to win on this emotional night. Your seniors Mia and Abigail had great games with Abigail helping lead the team in minutes played with four and Mia helping lead the team in rebounds with 7.

The highlights of this season came as the Tigers boys team pulled out the huge upset over newly established foe, Broomfeild with over 120 spots in between the two in a huge 55-52 victory. The girls also had an amazing six game winning streak knocking off Rocky Mountain, Mountain Range, Loveland, Brighton, Fairview, and Boulder before a close loss to Broomfield 44-47 and bouncing back to beat Prairie View 54-14

Despite the outcome of both of these senior night games and seasons our amazing seniors Darryk Hall, John Wright, Jett Hinze, Colton Turner, Grady Carey, Mia Welty, Kaylee Torres and Abigail Hounder these Tigers made an impact on your school on the court and off that will never be forgotten.
